چکیده

This thesis contributes to the field of collaborative information systems and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). It extends the notion of technological support for design activities "in use" beyond providing the flexibility to tailor collaborative software, to provide means to support the appropriation process of these tools in their application fields. Two long-term studies on the evolution of usages of collaborative software in a German authority and in a network of freelancers in the field of consulting form the foundation of this work. Based on the experience there, it was possible to identify user activities that drive the appropriation process and to establish a perspective on the appropriation of a Groupware as a social process. Appropriation can be described as a collaborative effort of end users, who perform "appropriation activities" to make sense of the software in their work context. Besides activities to configure the software to fit into the technological, organisational and individual work context of the users ('Tailoring'), there is a larger area of technology-related communication, demonstration and negotiation activities aimed at establishing a shared understanding of how a software artefact works and what it can contribute to the shared work context. The mutual shaping of the technology and organisational contexts resemble an ongoing design process that end users perform largely without any involvement of professional

Tailoring together: A systematization and two cases

In this paper we depict collaborative aspects of tailoring software. We provide a categorization distinguishing between three levels of intensity of user ties regarding tools usage (“shared use”, “shared context”, and “shared tool”) and discuss approaches to support collaborative tailoring in these scenarios. For the two levels with the most intense ties (“Shared Context” and “Shared Tool”) we ...

Socio-Technical Self-Descriptions as a Means for Appropriation

Processes of appropriation of groupware systems in organizations are social processes that are strongly intertwined with processes of reflection and communication. We suggest facilitating these processes by supporting the creation of socio-technical self-descriptions. Self-description is an important element of social systems such as organizations and can be extended to include descriptions of ...

Negotiating Infrastructure: Supporting the Appropriation of Collaborative Software

A growing body of research work tries to go beyond the classical dichotomy of ‘design’ and ‘use’ in order to better understand the accountabilities of technology production and use. Our research focuses on the creative activities at the ‘user’ end of the production line of organisational software. Support for these activities is traditionally discussed in the context of ‘Tailoring’ applications...

Appropriation and Re-Appropriation of Groupware: Theoretical and Practical Implications of a Long-term Case Study

This paper provides a long-term case study of a groupware’s appropriation1 in a German state government. The study covers the lifecycle from the groupware’s introduction to its removal. We also examined the consecutive re-introduction of another groupware application. During a period of about five years, the field of application offered us the opportunity to gain deep insights into personal, or...
